Instructions : The Holocaust was perhaps the worst event of the 20th century. But the suffering of 6 million Jews and 6 million other peoples would have been worse without the bravery and courage of some people who took it upon themselves to help people, either by hiding them or helping them to leave German occupied areas.

1. Students are to read “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Anne Frank. The true story of the Anne Frank, her family & 4 other people who were hidden from the Germans fro 25 months.
2. After reading the book students will review material from AnneFrank.org about Victor Kugler (Mr. Kraler in the book) and Miep Gies who are two of the people responsible for helping Anne & the others hide.

3. Students will use the document analysis worksheets to analyze the Documents and answer questions about them.
4. After the document analysis stage, students will draw upon their research, background information and critical thinking skills to answer the following essay question
“How did various people help Jews & other groups during the 1930’s & 1940’s to hide or escape persecution by the Germans?”
When writing this essay, please be sure to EXPLAIN why the Germans targeted certain groups as well as the roles of the ghettos and concentration camps in carrying out Hitler’s “Final Solution”.
